should I teach yoga?
I trained in heated power yoga in 2011 at Prana Power Yoga in Boston. I went on to teach in that style for about four years, until doubts and questions began to surface. Why does a practice that is deeply internal, transformational, spiritual, and collectivist have such an unspoken focus on the external? Up to that point, I had rarely encountered teachers who didn’t wear Lululemon, weren’t thin, white, able-bodied, or native English speakers. I also rarely heard honest conver

Modern Western wellness culture
What we see on the surface of modern Western “wellness culture” are things like fad diets, dream catchers, the idealization of thinness, whiteness, and wealth—manifesting as $25 yoga classes, Lululemon pants and “namaslay” merch. This is not wellness. It’s a cultural illness: cultural appropriation, spiritual bypassing, individualism, patriarchy, white supremacy, and the commodification of entire cultures. And I say this as someone who used to go to hot yoga almost every day.

Grind Culture
The propaganda has already begun. As the new year approaches, the Wellness Industrial Complex is thriving—feeding on our insecurities and convincing us we haven’t done enough, achieved enough “success,” worked out hard enough, eaten “clean” enough, or made enough money. The message is simple: whatever we are, it’s not enough. And therefore, we must do more. This is a lie. There’s nothing inherently wrong with having goals. But there must also be space for satisfaction. For re

Collective wellness
Collective wellness begins with recognizing that our personal health is shaped by the conditions of our communities and the environments. It’s not just about clean air, green spaces, or walkable neighborhoods (though those absolutely matter). It’s also about having real, meaningful access to human connection — the kind that reminds us we belong. We’re wired for it. When community is missing, something essential in us begins to dim. Our nervous systems struggle. Our resilience

Why gift cards?
I’m not much for the hustle of Black Friday deals… and/but there are lots of GOOD reasons to shop small and local. Plus there’s a real difference between buying items that are headed for the landfill, and buying experiences for loved ones that contribute to their joy and wellbeing. So if you are searching for a unique, thoughtful, local gift- you can give the gift of a memorable experience at Electric Cottage Collective. From Nov 28–Dec 25, get 20% off gift cards for any of o

What is Barre & Beats?
Ever wonder what Barre & Beats is? Think: Pilates meets yoga with elements of dance—using bodyweight resistance, light weights, a yoga mat, and sometimes resistance bands. 🎵 This class is all about building strength and flexibility—not just in our bodies, but in our collective resilience. Expect an energizing playlist full of bops across genres: pop, hip hop, R&B, funk, electronic, and whatever else gets us moving and grooving together. 🤠 All levels welcome! We offer plenty

Yoga is not fitness.
Physical exercise was never the true purpose of yoga. Yoga is a living tradition thousands of years old, rooted in India and North Africa — and it’s never been about touching your toes. To honor yoga’s roots, we have to practice all eight limbs, not just asana (the physical postures). Many of these limbs call us toward awareness, compassion, justice, and deep personal and collective transformation. Yoga carries a long history of resisting colonization and supremacy. Yet when

Sliding Scale Pricing Guide
Hey friends! 👋 We’ve got some new faces around here, so we wanted to share about how our pricing works. We offer sliding-scale memberships and scholarships because we believe in solidarity. Community is stronger when we can access the same resources.( If you need a scholarship to class, just reach out and ask 💛) As a tiny, anticapitalist biz, we thrive by caring for each other and keeping our space accessible and sustainable. When you choose your rate—decide with honesty ab

Coworking is Good for Us!
As more of us work remotely or freelance, it’s easy to feel cut off—from people, from purpose, from a sense of shared daily life. The isolation that grew during the pandemic didn’t just disappear—it exposed how little the systems we live in are designed to care for us. That’s one of the reasons Electric Cottage Collective exists. We didn’t build ECC to offer Wi-Fi and desk space—we built it as an alternative to hustle culture and lonely productivity. It’s a space where you ca

Dance Cardio Teacher Training is Underway!
We did it! Our very first weekend of Dance Cardio Teacher Training is officially in the books — and while we’re feeling a bit tired, we’re even more buzzing with excitement about the incredible group of student teachers who are well on their way to leading their own Dance Cardio classes! When asked what they’ve started noticing during class, one student teacher summed it up perfectly in a single word: “Magic.” And it’s true — every time you step into a Body Language (dance ca
