What Is a Creative Coworking Space?

Maybe you've heard of coworking spaces. Maybe you've even worked in one. But what exactly is a creative coworking space?

At its simplest, a creative coworking space is a shared workplace designed not just for getting work done, but for making room for creativity, connection, and a different way of working. It's a place where you can bring your laptop, your sketchbook, your small business, your half-finished idea, or your Monday-morning brain, and work alongside other people doing their own thing.

At Electric Cottage Collective, we think of it as a little more than a desk. So, what makes a coworking space "creative"? Traditional coworking spaces often focus on the practical stuff: reliable Wi-Fi, desks, meeting rooms, coffee, and a professional place to work. Those things matter. We have them, too. But our creative coworking space asks a slightly different question: What else might help people feel more engaged, connected, and alive while they're working?

That might mean having access to art supplies. It might mean taking a yoga class between tasks, joining a craft night after work, or having an actual conversation with another human being instead of spending the entire day on Slack. It might mean working quietly in a sunny room while someone nearby is making something with their hands.

Creativity doesn't have to mean you're a professional artist. It can simply mean having some room in your day for curiosity, experimentation, play, and making.

Who uses a creative coworking space?

Creative coworking spaces aren't just for artists.

They're often a good fit for:

  • Remote workers who are tired of working from home

  • Freelancers and independent contractors

  • Artists and makers

  • Therapists, educators, and other helping professionals

  • Small business owners

  • Writers and designers

  • People who work for nonprofits or community organizations

  • Anyone who wants a workplace with a little more personality and community

At Electric Cottage Collective, our coworking community includes people with all kinds of jobs and creative practices. You don't have to identify as a "creative person" to belong here.

Why not just work from home?

Working from home can be wonderful. So can pajamas. But, for a lot of people, working from home also means spending an entire day alone, working from the same room where they eat, relax, and sleep.

A coworking space creates a little separation between home and work. It can also provide something that is harder to manufacture at home: other people. Not necessarily people you have to network with or collaborate with. Just people who are around. There's something surprisingly grounding about sitting in a room with other humans who are also quietly doing their thing. (If this hits home for you, look up the term “body doubling” if you’re not familiar)

What is the difference between a creative coworking space and a traditional coworking space?

There's plenty of overlap. Both can give you a professional place to work, reliable Wi-Fi, a desk, and a break from your kitchen table. The difference is often in the culture and programming.

A creative coworking space might offer:

  • Art and craft classes

  • Yoga or movement classes

  • Workshops

  • Community events

  • Creative supplies or studio space

  • Opportunities to meet other local creatives

  • Spaces designed for both focused work and informal connection

At ECC, coworking is intentionally connected to our arts, movement, and wellness programming. You might spend the morning answering emails, take a barre class over lunch, and spend the evening at a craft night. Your workday doesn't have to be completely separate from the rest of your life.

Creative coworking in Brunswick, Maine

Electric Cottage Collective is a creative coworking, wellness, and community space in Brunswick, Maine. Our coworking space is designed for people who want a place to work that feels a little less like an office and a little more like a community.

Coworking members have access to the space during coworking hours, along with Wi-Fi, coffee and tea, a kitchen, parking, and a community of other people working, creating, and figuring things out alongside them. And because ECC is also home to yoga, dance, movement, art classes, workshops, and community events, there's usually something happening beyond the desk.

Do I have to be an artist to join a creative coworking space?

Nope. You don't need to make art. You don't need to own a small business. You don't need to have a particularly creative job. You just need a reason to want a place to work. Maybe you're a therapist who works remotely. Maybe you run a nonprofit. Maybe you're an artist who needs somewhere to answer emails. Maybe you're self-employed and miss having coworkers. Maybe you simply want to stop working from your dining room table. That's enough.

Maybe coworking can be about more than productivity

There's a lot of pressure to make every part of work more productive. More output. More efficiency. More optimization. We're interested in something a little different.

What if a workplace could also support connection, creativity, and being a person?

That's the idea behind creative coworking. Not necessarily working harder. Just having a place to work where you don't have to do it completely alone.
