Coworking is Good for Us!

ree

As more of us work remotely or freelance, it’s easy to feel cut off—from people, from purpose, from a sense of shared daily life. The isolation that grew during the pandemic didn’t just disappear—it exposed how little the systems we live in are designed to care for us.

That’s one of the reasons Electric Cottage Collective exists. We didn’t build ECC to offer Wi-Fi and desk space—we built it as an alternative to hustle culture and lonely productivity. It’s a space where you can work, but also rest, connect, and create without being squeezed for output or perfection.

ECC is part coworking space, part makerspace, part experiment in collective wellbeing. It’s intentionally affordable and built on the idea that care—mutual, creative, community-based care—can be the center of how we live and work.

And we’re not alone in thinking this way. There’s research out there that found that, of all the things people look for in a coworking space—collaboration, amenities, location, cost—community was what mattered most. When people felt a sense of belonging, they were happier and more grounded in their work. Community isn’t a perk—it’s a need.

Community-Centric Coworking spaces can slow down the churn of capitalism:

✳️ They keep people local, supporting small towns and local economies

✳️ They reduce the need to commute, lowering emissions

✳️ They allow space for interdisciplinary thinking, not just narrow career paths

✳️ And they make it easier for people to live full, creative lives—on their own terms
